Dr Hans J. Schmidt is nationally recognized board-certified surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. He performed the first laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery in New Jersey in 1999. He pioneered Lap-Band Surgery starting in 2001 and is of the most experienced sleeve gastrectomy surgeons in the region. Dr. Hans has published numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed surgical journals and has presented research at local, national, and international meetings. He is presently the Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at a tertiary teaching hospital in northern New Jersey
Born and raised in New Jersey, he attended Penn State University and then New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. After completing surgical residency, he went into practice in Hackensack, NJ. His interest in the treatment of obesity started as a surgical resident, with two mentors performing open gastric bypass surgery.
Having seen the profound results surgery had on patients he adapted the open procedure to minimally invasive techniques. He was part of the initial FDA trial for the Orbera intragastic balloon, which he continues to perform. He was also a founding officer and Past-President of the NJ Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. Dr. Hans has served as President of the Medical and Dental Staff at his primary hospital.
During 25 years in practice, Dr. Hans has cared for over 10,000 obese patients. “Over these years, I have learned not only about my patients struggle to lose weight, but also the constant roller coaster of guilt, success, frustration, hope and exasperation that my patients experience” Weight loss for someone whose extremely obese is one of the most challenging tasks imaginable. Most patients lead incredibly rewarding lives, in the business and personally. They are teachers, and parents. Police officers, doctors, lawyers and celebrities. “They can conquer virtually every obstacle thrown at them. But they can’t conquer their weight. Their stories resonate with me, and I am honored to have gotten to know these patients and to have become part of their journey toward seeking and achieving weight loss, improved health and better quality of life. I want to share what I’ve learned over these 25 years with anyone else who may benefit from my experience”.
